With cybercrime on the rise, schools are often viewed as an easy target and are subject to the same level of cyber threat as every other organisation. This means it is essential that all staff are up to date with their responsibilities in guarding against an online attack and understand what information should be protected and how. This is especially important since the introduction of GDPR.

Our Essential CPD course on cyber security provides you and your staff with the core content you need to ensure adherence with the latest cyber security guideline. Delivered by subject matter expert, Emma Davis, the course has been divided into 10 easily digestible modules and contains links to further learning, resources and activities throughout, with knowledge tests and assessments to help you evidence your cyber security compliance.

Module 1: What is cyber security and information security?

In module 1, you will learn about the difference between cybersecurity and cyber information. You will learn about the legislative framework around protecting data, information assurance and simple measures you can take to make yourself a harder targ...

Module 2: What information needs protection and why

Module 2 will explain to users what information needs protection and why. It will cover different types of personal data, special category data and intellectual property, providing definitions and why each type of data should be kept secure.

Module 3: Online risks

In module 3, you will learn more about online risks and why cyberattacks occur. You will understand that anyone could be a victim of an attack and whilst most attacks are untargeted, there is a rising increase in the number of targeted attacks.

Module 4: What is cybercrime /are cyberattacks?

Module 4 will define what a cyberattack / cybercrime is. It will explain who the National Crime Agency (NCA) are and what they do and also discuss the dangers that insider threats can pose.

Module 5: The impact of cybercrime

Module 5 will discuss the impacts of cybercrime and the level of destruction that cybercrime can have. It will discuss different types of impact including financial, psychological, operational, threats to personal safety and threat to life.

Module 6: Different types of cybercrime

In module 6, you will explore the different types of cyberattacks that take place. You will learn about malware, phishing, Denial of Service (DOS), password, SQL, drive-by and birthday attacks as well as several others.

Module 7: The Computer Misuse Act

Module 7 will cover the Computer Misuse Act and explore its main functionality around accessing and modifying computer data. It will define the main three offences and the penalties for committing a crime under the act.

Module 8: Whole school approach to cybersecurity

In Module 8, you will learn all about taking a whole school approach to cybersecurity. You will learn about government guidance and the statutory policies and practices that schools should be adhering to in order to keep your students safe online.

Module 9: How to minimise the risk of a cyberattack

Module 9 will describe how learners are able to minimise the risk of cyberattacks. This includes best practice around password protection, email awareness and being vigilant around malicious software and websites.

Module 10: How to spot and report cybercrime

Finally, in module 10, you will learn about how you can spot cybercrime and cyberattacks. You will be provided with simple awareness signs and critical questions that you should consider when evaluating if you have been subject of a cyberattack.
