About the Course

When children are well-nourished, they will be in the best position to learn and play in an early years setting. It is important that food and menus offer are healthy and nutritious and that menus are well-thought-out to ensure that the children are given meal options that take into account allergies as well as nutritional value.

Developed by The National College, this Essential CPD course will give you an understanding of how to develop menus and offer nutritious meals to children who are in your care.

To successfully understand and achieve the objectives of the course, learners are expected to engage in all aspects of the learning process and complete all relevant activities to ensure they can successfully apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in their own setting.

Course Units

Introduction

Developed by The National College, this course provides you with the knowledge and skills to plan and develop menus and encourage healthy eating in line with DfE guidance and best practice.

Module 1: Nutrients

In this module, you will learn about different nutrients that can be found in our food and how they benefit and support the growing bodies of infants and young children. It will also cover what nutrients need to be limited within an early years setti...

Module 2: Dietary requirements 0-4 years

In this module, you will learn about why it is important to provide early years children with the correct food, including that impact a good diet will have on those within your care.

Module 3: Statutory framework for EYFS

In this module, you will learn about statutory regulations that impact early years settings, the importance of this framework and how it support the safe development of babies and young children.

Module 4: Menu planning for children 1-4 years old

This module will cover what kinds of food are appropriate for children in this age range, what amount should be given and what proportions are required of each nutrient on a daily basis.

Module 5: Infants 0-6 months

In this module we will learn about the importance of breastfeeding and its benefits to the infant, and how this should be managed within an early years setting to ensure that breast milk is managed appropriately within the setting.

Module 6: Infants 6-12 months

In this module, you will learn about the transition from milk to solid foods and how solid food can be gradually introduced into an infant’s diet, including how to encourage infants to start feeding themselves.

Module 7: 7 steps to planning healthy meals

This module will cover the necessary steps that you should follow when planning and preparing your own meals to serve to children in an early years setting, and discuss the benefits of planning meals in advance.

Module 8: Food safety advice for young children

Young children are categorised as a vulnerable group. Therefore, in this module, you will learn about the issues relating to food safety for young children and how to reduce these risks within your early years setting.

Module 9: Managing food allergies and intolerances, and meeting cultural needs.

In this module you will learn about the importance of working closely with families to manage food allergies, intolerances and understanding foods required for cultural needs

Module 10: Reading food labels

In this module you will learn about the importance of reading food labels when buying pre-prepared foods and learn about which foods to avoid.

Module 11: Cooking from scratch

In this module you will learn how to choose the right ingredients to use when cooking from scratch and we also include a couple of recipes to demonstrate the use of various foods and quantities involved.
