All school staff have a duty of care towards their pupils, which includes the power to use reasonable force to prevent injury, damage to property or disorder, as defined in the DfE’s guidance document, ‘Use of reasonable force 2013’. Staff should have clarity on the use of this power so that they act within the law.
This essential CPD course provides you with the core content you need to feel more confident about using reasonable force in school and establishing the responsibilities of school staff, leaders and governing bodies.
Split into bite-size modules, the training has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost effective and most time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high quality remote video CPD format accessible on any device, anytime, anywhere.
Delivered by qualified emergency medical technician Samantha Kendall, the course has been divided into four modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning.

- Use of reasonable force 2013
- Recognising the legal responsibilities of schools regarding the use of reasonable force.
- Understanding the definition of ‘reasonable force’ and ‘physical restraint’ and the broad range of actions that can be covered by the term.
- Identifying when, where and by whom reasonable force might be used and the different techniques staff can use.
- Understanding school powers and policies to ensure searching students and their belongings is conducted appropriately.
- Recognising schools’ responsibilities towards children with SEND and the use of reasonable force.
Module 1: What is reasonable force and physical restraint?
Module one will explain what is meant by ‘reasonable force’ and ‘physical restraint’. You will learn the difference between the two with examples of when and why you may need to use them.
Module 2: Who can use reasonable force?
Module two will explore the various techniques of reasonable force, who is allowed to use it, and under what circumstances it should be used. It will list some common dos and don’ts when using reasonable force and physical restraints.
Module 3: What is your legal power?
Module three will draw on the Education and Inspections Act 2006 to explain your legal powers and responsibilities when it comes to using reasonable force on a student. It will also explain your responsibilities towards SEN children.
Module 4: Searching a student
Module four will explore the hows and whys of searching students, drawing on your school’s behaviour policy to explain when it is and when it is not necessary to search a student’s belongings.
