This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, governors and teachers with practical advice and guidance on incorporating a range of scaffolding techniques into classroom practice to help disadvantaged pupils catch up with non-disadvantaged peers.

Research indicates that the pandemic has only served to widen the attainment gap. The DfE’s ‘Understanding Progress in the 2020/21 Academic Year’ reports that, as a result of school closures, the learning loss for disadvantaged pupils at secondary level was 2 months more in reading than for their peers.

In this webinar, Amjad Ali, experienced SENCO, senior leader and education trainer, explains how schools can put in place effective scaffolding support to help reverse the trend, enabling the most disadvantaged pupils access the same curriculum content and academic opportunities as their peers.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to develop a scaffolding strategy for disadvantaged pupils through the implementation of techniques which help close the attainment gap.

  • Gaining insight into the term ‘scaffolding’ and wide-ranging scaffolding practices which secondary schools can employ, depending on age, ability and the subject being taught.

  • Appreciating how scaffolding can be used to build disadvantaged pupils’ self-esteem, confidence, motivation and engagement as they move towards independent understanding.

  • Recognising the importance of assessing pupils’ capabilities so that appropriate scaffolds are introduced and removed at the right time, enabling pupils to build on secure knowledge.

  • Being able to identify a range of resources to further develop a scaffolding strategy which improves the attainment of disadvantaged pupils in secondary schools.
