About the Webinar

This webinar will provide designated mental health leads, headteachers, senior leaders and governors with advice and practical guidance on preventing and addressing suicidal ideation and self-harm.

Suicide and self-harm are massive issues: suicide is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK and 10% of children aged 15-16 are self-harming. Research suggests, however, that most teachers and staff in school simply do not feel equipped to support vulnerable pupils.

In this webinar, Anna Bateman, subject matter expert on mental health and wellbeing, who has worked in an advisory role for the DfE, explains the key concepts around suicidal ideation and self-harm, sharing strategies for prevention and early intervention, and creating a safe and supportive environment where difficult subjects can be broached, and lines of escalation are clearly established.

Learning Outcomes

  • Being able to implement prevention and early intervention strategies to support pupils, including initiating difficult conversations and helping pupils manage overwhelming feelings.

  • Gaining an insight into the key concepts around self-harm and suicidal ideation, including definitions, risk factors and key signs.

  • Understanding the principles of formulation in assessing each pupil’s level of risk of further harm and escalation of behaviour.

  • Identifying a range of resources, tools and documents to help all staff better understand self-harm and suicidal ideation and support vulnerable pupils.

  • Understanding how to create a safe and supportive environment for the discussion of mental health issues and escalation of support where necessary.
