About the Webinar

This webinar will provide early leaders, teachers and practitioners with practical tools and advice on how to ensure settings can extend children’s thinking and problem-solving while working within 10 in the EYFS curriculum.

The Early years foundation stage statutory framework states that a strong grounding in numbers is essential so that all children develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically. Children should be able to count confidently, develop a deep understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships between them and the patterns within those numbers.

In this webinar, Julie Lush, specialist mathematics consultant for primary schools, unpicks what the number early learning goals are, particularly the key relationships and patterns within numbers up to 10, and runs-through various practical ways settings can maintain challenge for this area.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the requirements of the EYFS early goals for numbers and mathematics, particularly for those working within 10

  • Recognising the characteristics of someone who is working at a greater depth level within the number range 0-10 and understanding what ‘deep understanding’ means

  • Strengthening teaching skills to extend and build on prior learning through reasoning and problem solving for gifted mathematicians

  • Identifying when to use different strategies to maintain challenge and building a toolbox of activities to provide something more demanding

  • Recognising the most useful manipulatives and representations that will aid understanding and allow children to apply what they have learnt to solve simple problems
