About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, mental health leads, teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on tackling loneliness in young people, to promote wellbeing and help prevent mental health issues arising in future.

Broad-ranging factors can trigger loneliness in young people - for example, a move to a new home or school, family conflict, bereavement, bullying, disability or financial disadvantage, and not least, the loss of social skills and connection as a result of lockdown. Research suggests that loneliness can cause mental health issues, which themselves, can compound feelings of loneliness.

In this webinar, Anna Bateman, subject matter expert on mental health and wellbeing, who has worked in an advisory role for the DfE, explores the causes of loneliness in young people, and explains the steps schools can take to address the issue in their own settings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to design and deliver a whole-school approach to tackling loneliness, helping to promote wellbeing, confidence and resilience.

  • Being able to identify young people who are experiencing loneliness and recognise those who might be particularly susceptible, such as those who are in care or who have disabilities.

  • Appreciating the importance of destigmatising loneliness and providing pupils with a safe environment in which they can share their feelings openly.

  • Understanding how to support pupils experiencing loneliness to overcome challenges they might be experiencing, so that they can make and sustain strong friendships.

  • Recognising the importance of taking a whole-school approach to creating an inclusive environment in which all young people can connect and flourish.
