About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 5 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, governors and Ofsted leads with expert insight into the criteria used by Ofsted inspectors in evaluating how staff interact positively with children, particularly with regard to physical intervention and restrictions of liberty.

On 6 October 2021, the DfE updated its Positive environments where children can flourish guidance, which applies to social care and school inspections, in recognition of the fact that restraint negatively impacts children’s mental health and wellbeing and to underline the importance of protecting and promoting children’s rights.

In this webinar, Karen Pilling, SEND expert and acting deputy head with an extensive background leading on SEN training in schools, will explain the key principles established in the updated guidance, and how schools can translate these into everyday classroom practice, so that the need for restraint and restrictive intervention is reduced, and the safety of all and respect for children are upheld.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the inspection principles in Ofsted’s updated guidance, and how these underline the importance of taking positive steps to diffuse difficult situations.

  • Appreciating the legal context of the updated guidance and schools’ overriding duty to protect and promote the rights of children.

  • Gaining an insight into a range of behaviours and their triggers, including those of children with neuro-disability, communication and special educational needs.

  • Understanding how to problem-solve tense situations and find the least intrusive way possible to support and empower children and keep them safe.

  • Being able to identify further resources to help embed a whole-school culture which protects and promotes the rights of children in all circumstances.
