About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 3 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, teachers and teaching assistants with advice and practical guidance on establishing classroom settings which help overcome barriers to achievement for boys, to enhance their motivation, engagement and attainment.

Most recent data from the DfE indicates that girls are already outperforming boys at the end of the EYFS, a trend which persists at key stage 2 and throughout secondary school. By identifying and overcoming barriers to boys’ achievement - without detriment to that of girls - schools can help redress the balance.

In this webinar, Gary Wilson, teacher, school improvement officer, author and consultant with over 27 years’ experience, explains how boys’ learning style differs to that of girls and encourages schools to re-evaluate provision to ensure that potential barriers to boys’ achievement are being addressed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gaining insight into the causes of boys’ underachievement, and developing a strategy for overcoming barriers to learning in the school’s specific setting.

  • Appreciating the historical context and ongoing trend that sees girls outstrip boys in academic performance from EYFS onwards.

  • Understanding the different ways that boys and girls learn, and the possible mismatching of teaching and learning to boys’ preferred way of working.

  • Recognising the importance of creating a positive achievement culture across the school which eliminates gender bias and establishes positive masculine models.

  • Appreciating the importance of nurturing boys’ facility with language, and of reading fiction, in developing emotional intelligence.
