The overall pupil absence rate has increased in recent years, even when Covid-related absence is excluded. The government has established an attendance alliance to tackle the underlying causes of pupil absence, including anxiety and other mental health issues which have undoubtedly been exacerbated during the pandemic, so that all pupils can access the same education opportunities.

In this webinar, Mark Emmerson, DfE behaviour adviser, CEO of the City of London Academies Trust, former headteacher and principal, will explain the government guidance in terms of underlying principles and actions schools can take to improve attendance, and how it can form the basis of a pupil-focused approach to attendance and persistent absence.
