About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 14 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, governors and teachers with advice and practical guidance on developing a whole school attendance strategy which prioritises pupils’ safety and wellbeing, aligned with the DfE’s Improving school attendance: advice for schools and local authorities.

The overall pupil absence rate has increased in recent years, even when Covid-related absence is excluded. The government has established an attendance alliance to tackle the underlying causes of pupil absence, including anxiety and other mental health issues which have undoubtedly been exacerbated during the pandemic, so that all pupils can access the same education opportunities.

In this webinar, Mark Emmerson, DfE behaviour adviser, CEO of the City of London Academies Trust, former headteacher and principal, will explain the government guidance in terms of underlying principles and actions schools can take to improve attendance, and how it can form the basis of a pupil-focused approach to attendance and persistent absence.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to create a whole school attendance strategy which is focused on pupils’ needs, aligned with government expectations.

  • Gaining insight into the principles underpinning the DfE’s guidance on improving school attendance, including clear communications, systems and respectful relationships.

  • Appreciating the importance of establishing a whole school culture which promotes school attendance and punctuality, engaging staff, pupils and parents.

  • Recognising the importance of prevention and early intervention, and establishing clear procedures for managing persistent absence and collaboration with external agencies.

  • Being able to identify further sources of information and resources to inform the development of a pupil-focused approach to school attendance and persistent absence.
