About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on helping pupils to develop interpersonal skills and rebuild friendships after a period of remote education, enhancing their wellbeing and readiness to learn.

It is becoming apparent that the instruction to stay at home during lockdown has significantly delayed the social and emotional development of many young people, as opportunities to consolidate friendships and negotiate social situations were lost.

In this webinar, Claire Lyons, deputy headteacher, SENCO and mental health lead with over 25 years' experience working with schools, provides insight into the impact of lockdown on young people and offers a whole-school recovery programme to accelerate and facilitate social and emotional development.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to implement a relationship recovery programme which identifies and addresses the social and emotional needs of pupils in specific settings.

  • Appreciating the importance of friendship bonds to secondary pupils - possibly the sole focus for young people throughout their entire secondary education.

  • Recognising the negative impact of lockdown on pupils, including increased incidences of anxiety-related issues and lower attendance rates.

  • Understanding how to identify common concerns through observation and comparison across year groups.

  • Being able to design and deliver individual and group action plans which best harness available resources for relationship recovery.
