About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 74 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide EYFS school leaders, teachers and practitioners with an understanding of how to develop children’s ability to read in line with the DfE’s reformed Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework and supportive curriculum guidance.

The DfE’s revised EYFS Framework will become statutory for all schools in September 2021. Early adopter schools are already adhering to the framework, supported by the recent DfE ‘Development Matters’ curriculum guidance, which sets out the pathways of children’s development, including reading.

In this webinar, Megan Dixon, a specialist literacy teacher, consultant and trainer who has worked with the EEF and on an advisory basis for the DfE and Ofsted, explores how schools can prepare for the new EYFS reforms in order to build language comprehension and word reading as part of the wider literacy area of learning.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to teach reading in line with the EYFS Framework reforms and how they will impact current teaching and learning in early years.

  • Recognising the duties placed on schools under the revised EYFS Framework in terms of education programmes and early learning goals for reading.

  • Developing a strategy for implementing changes to the school’s curriculum so that it is compliant with the EYFS Framework statutory requirements.

  • Understanding how schools can support children to develop language comprehension, recognition of familiar printed words and decoding of unfamiliar words in order to meet developmental goals in literacy.

  • Identifying the characteristics of effective teaching and learning in reading through early years in order for children to develop a strong grounding in literacy.
