About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 45 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders and teachers with insight into the role and responsibilities of mentors assigned to early career teachers (ECTs) in providing support through the two-year induction, in accordance with the latest DfE guidance and the early career framework (ECF) statutory requirements.

On 13 April 2022, the DfE published Guidance for mentors: how to support ECF-based training which explains how mentors should carry out their duties in ensuring that the ECT receives a high-quality induction, in fulfilment of the ECF.

In this webinar, Jayne Robinson, school Leader and SCITT tutor whose 25 years’ experience includes roles as NQT mentor and EYFS lead, provides expert insight into the mentor role, its focus on support as distinct from assessment, and eligibility for DfE-funded training and materials.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gaining insight into the role and responsibilities of the mentor in supporting ECTs through the two-year induction in accordance with ECF statutory guidance.

  • Understanding the context of the newly published guidance for mentors as part of the ECT induction process and wider national roll-out of ECF Reforms.

  • Recognising the separate roles of the mentor in providing support, and headteacher and induction tutor in assessing the ECT against teachers’ standards.

  • Understanding what to do if the ECT has concerns or difficulties, pauses or withdraws from induction, or if the mentor has concerns about their role.

  • Appreciating eligibility criteria for funding and materials for mentors whose schools use a training provider or accredited materials to deliver ECF-based training.
