About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, designated safeguarding leads (DSLs), mental health leads and all teaching staff with advice and practical guidance on fulfilling their statutory duties with regard to school exclusions for pupils with SEND, highlighting the requirement to put the child’s best interests at the core of any decisions.

In response to Timpson’s landmark review of school exclusions in 2019, the government strengthened schools’ accountability around the use of exclusions, underlining the importance of making the child’s best interest a priority, and the right of all pupils, including those with SEND, to the same high-quality education.

In this webinar, Faye Whittle, SEND advisor and inclusion consultant with over 20 years’ experience working in educational settings, explains schools’ statutory duties and explores how an understanding of SEND can help inform decision-making processes so that all pupils, including the most disadvantaged, have the best chance to succeed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding statutory duties around school exclusions, including schools’ accountability for the outcomes of permanently excluded children.

  • Appreciating the statutory expectations placed on schools regarding pupils with SEND, including safeguarding considerations.

  • Gaining an insight into broad-ranging additional needs, which might not be formally diagnosed, and which might negatively impact pupil behaviour.

  • Recognising that consideration of SEND and schools’ safeguarding responsibilities should inform any decision-making process regarding exclusions.

  • Understanding how to develop a whole-school behaviour strategy where exclusion is considered a last resort and which prioritises all pupils’ best interests.
