About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 56 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide modern foreign languages teachers , subject and curriculum leaders and headteachers with an insight into the proposed changes to subject content and assessment arrangements for GCSE modern foreign languages (MFL) qualifications in French, German and Spanish, and explain how schools can take part in consultation.

The Department for Education (DfE) has launched consultation on proposed changes to subject content to ensure that it continues to be rigorous and support high-quality teaching. Ofqual has similarly launched consultation on proposed assessment arrangements to ensure that they reflect the aims and requirements of the changed content. The deadline for both consultations is 19 May 2021.

In this webinar, ALL, the UK's major subject association for those involved in teaching foreign languages at all levels, explores proposed subject content and supporting assessment arrangements, which are intended to reflect research and make language GCSEs more accessible and motivating, and explains how schools can engage in the consultation process.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the background to proposed changes to the GCSE MFL qualifications, in particular, the Teaching Schools Council’s 2016 MFL pedagogy review.

  • Gaining an insight into the proposed subject content changes to GCSE MFL qualifications, and how these might impact future teaching and learning.

  • Appreciating the rationale for proposed subject content changes to drive and inform schools’ engagement in the consultation process.

  • Gaining familiarity with Ofqual’s proposed assessment arrangements in support of the changes, including revised objectives, tiered assessments and non-exam assessment.

  • Understanding the importance of taking part in the consultation process in order to help determine decisions on changes to GCSE qualifications in MFL.
