Developing Reading Comprehension Skills in Readiness for Secondary School

This webinar will equip headteachers, curriculum leaders, subject leaders, teachers and teaching assistants with evidence-based pedagogical techniques and resources to help primary school pupils achieve the required standard in reading comprehension as a foundation for success at secondary school.

The transition from Years 6 to 7 represents a step change in children’s academic development, as they embark on in-depth study of an array of secondary curriculum subjects. Whilst most children will have acquired necessary reading and comprehension skills, for others, difficulties in these areas can pose a barrier to learning. Disruption to education this academic year will have only served to widen the reading gap, particularly for disadvantaged pupils, including those with SEND and EAL.

In this webinar, Emma Rogers, experienced literacy and learning expert, senior lecturer, English lead and former teacher, defines the required standard of reading comprehension for pupils transitioning to secondary school and identifies best practice and resources which schools can draw upon in key stage 2 to support reading comprehension.
