About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour (approx.)

This webinar will provide governors, headteachers and senior leaders with an expert insight into their responsibilities with respect to developing and implementing first aid provision for staff, pupils and visitors both in school and off-site.

On 14 February 2022, the DfE updated their guidance on ‘First aid in schools, early years and colleges’; the first update since 2014. First aid provision must be available while people are on school or college premises. It must also be available when staff, pupils and students are working elsewhere on school or college activities including any off-site activity such as educational visits.

In this webinar, Samantha Kendall, experienced first aider and emergency medical technician with over seven years’ front line ambulance experience, explores what the updated guidance means for schools, what is recommended best practice and how senior school leaders can ensure compliance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding what the minimum requirements are for schools and colleges with respect to meeting first aid provision and designating a first aider.

  • Recognising the legal policy requirements around first aid and carrying out a first aid needs assessment, including how often it should be reviewed.

  • Identifying the criteria under which a first aider or appointed person should be considered, what level of training they require and general training requirements for all staff.

  • Appreciating the importance of record keeping, meeting legislative obligations and disseminating information on first arrangements to employees, pupils and staff.

  • Understanding schools’ requirements to provide sufficient materials and equipment to meet first aid needs, accommodation and support for mental health and wellbeing.
