About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, principals, senior leaders and teachers with an expert overview and insight into the new mathematics syllabus for children in kindergarten, year 1 and year 2. It follows the first comprehensive review of the curriculum by the New South Wales (NSW) government in more than 30 years.

On 15 November 2021, the NSW Education Standards Authority published its new mathematics K-2 syllabus. It follows several recommendations made in the Masters review related to building strong foundations in the early years and aims to enable students to become confident users of mathematics, learning and applying the language of mathematics to communicate efficiently and effectively.

This webinar will explore the reforms in more depth including how the new syllabus is structured, what skills and competencies the curriculum expects young students to develop and how a greater emphasis has been placed on the development of reasoning for students to support a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the outcomes and content for mathematics K-2 as part of the new curriculum structure and focusing on the need to strengthen connections between concepts.

  • Recognising the processes for working mathematically for K-2 and how teachers can support students to use them in an interconnected way to become mathematically proficient.

  • Appreciating the rationale behind the new mathematics syllabus and examining the new outcomes for both early stage 1 and stage 1.

  • Realising how teachers should aim to make connections using different concepts in the curriculum and how related outcomes and content can be addressed in parallel.

  • Understanding the guidance on reasoning in mathematics for K-2 and the importance of helping students to think logically about relationships, both spatial and quantitative.
