About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 51 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, mental health leads, SENCOs, teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on building positive relationships between staff and pupils with SEND to manage behaviour and achieve better outcomes.

Pupils with SEND, including ASD, SEMH and ADHD, are more likely to have behavioural issues in school. By establishing positive and trusting relationships with pupils, staff are in a better position to manage challenging behaviour, so that more time can be devoted to teaching and learning.

In this webinar, Karen Pilling, SEND expert and acting deputy head with an extensive background leading on SEN training in schools, explains how schools can design and implement a relational approach, transforming behaviour and promoting inclusion

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to plan and implement a relational approach to enhance the behaviour of pupils with SEND, increase engagement and improve outcomes.

  • Appreciating the importance of setting consequences which are fair, proportionate and relevant to the behaviour in question and which preserve the dignity of all parties.

  • Being able to identify a range of models which can be easily incorporated into everyday practice, including Restorative Justice and Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy (PACE).

  • Gaining familiarity with additional strategies which can be used to support pupils with SEMH to overcome challenging behaviour and engage with learning.

  • Understanding the importance of self-regulation as a prerequisite for co-regulation and techniques which staff can employ to regulate their own and others’ moods.
