This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, mental health leads, SENCOs, teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on understanding and managing the behaviour of pupils with SEND, creating calmer environments which are more conducive to learning.

By gaining deeper insight into some of the triggers for challenging behaviour and acquiring techniques for appropriate behaviour management, including teaching and modelling self-regulation, staff are in a better position to prevent and address behavioural issues before they escalate.

This webinar will explain some of the internal and environmental triggers which are at the root of the challenging behaviour of pupils with SEND and how staff can take a pupil-centred approach, helping to avoid triggers in the first place and providing an effective and appropriate response when challenging behaviour does occur.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to take a pupil-centred approach to behaviour management of pupils with SEND, to enhance wellbeing and opportunities for teaching and learning.

  • Recognising the range of internal and environmental factors which might serve as triggers for challenging behaviour for pupils with SEND, and how these might be avoided.

  • Appreciating the importance of taking a pupil-centred approach to behaviour management, so that the unmet needs of the individual are addressed.

  • Understanding how to prevent escalation of challenging behaviour, including modelling and teaching self-regulation of emotions.

  • Being able to identify further resources to help embed a whole-school response to challenging behaviour, creating harmonious environments in which individual needs are addressed.
