About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 47 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, art & design leads, teachers and teaching assistants with an understanding of and practical guidance on teaching mastery of art & design, enabling pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and move confidently onto the next stage.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) reports that an effective approach to mastery learning can, on average, lead to an additional five months’ progress, although admit that making mastery learning work successfully is challenging. Whilst there is no single established view or definition of mastery, what is known is that it is connected with the concepts of shallow and deep learning.

In this webinar, Paul Carney, teacher and nationally recognised, NSEAD-registered art consultant, will explore the concept of teaching for mastery in art & design, highlighting the benefits that effective mastery teaching can deliver, and explaining how teachers might set about developing and achieving mastery in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding what the concept of ‘teaching mastery’ means and how to judge when mastery of a subject has been achieved.

  • Recognising the ways in which the term ‘mastery’ is used, core principles and different approaches to mastery pedagogy.

  • Being able to support pupils to achieve mastery of art & design at primary level using a progression model which precisely identifies and sequences what pupils need to know.

  • Recognising how effective mastery teaching can benefit pupils to foster a deeper and more embedded level of learning.

  • Identifying a range of sources of further information and guidance to enhance teaching the mastery of art & design.
