This webinar will provide headteachers, English leads, teachers and teaching assistants with an understanding of and practical guidance towards teaching the mastery of English, enabling pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and move confidently onto the next stage.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) report that an effective approach to mastery learning can, on average, lead to an additional 5 months progress, although admit that making mastery learning work successfully is challenging. Whilst there is no single established view or definition when it comes to mastery, what is known is that it is connected with the concepts of shallow and deep learning.

In this webinar Chris Whitney, international literacy consultant, moderator, writer and former deputy headteacher and teacher, will explore the concept of ‘teaching for mastery in English’, what the benefits of effective mastery learning can deliver and how teachers might think about developing and achieving mastery in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding what the concept of ‘teaching mastery’ means and how to judge when mastery of a subject has been achieved.

  • Recognising the ways in which the term ‘mastery’ is used and what principles mastery pedagogy works on.

  • Identifying what the teaching of reading and writing at KS1 and KS2 look like and practical advice for how to develop and achieve mastery in these two areas.

  • Understanding the different approaches and core principles behind implementing mastery teaching in the classroom.

  • Recognising what effective teaching for mastery can achieve and how it can benefit pupils to foster a deeper and more embedded level of learning.
