About the Webinar

This webinar will provide school leaders, mathematics leads and teaching staff at secondary level with the knowledge and skills to help students overcome maths anxiety and achieve better outcomes in numeracy.

Maths anxiety is a very real condition. A study by the University of Cambridge in 2019 reported that children as young as 6 are suffering a range of negative responses to the subject – from fear to despair and rage - which can severely impact their ability to succeed as they progress to secondary school and beyond.

In this webinar, Marie Thompson, qualified maths teacher and psychology expert with 16+ years’ experience of outstanding practice in schools, explains the causes and traits of maths anxiety, its impact on performance at school, and how to address the issue in order to achieve better pupil outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the origins and meaning of the term ‘maths anxiety’ as a psychological phenomenon and how it can act as a barrier to progress and attainment.

  • Recognising the range of negative experiences in the classroom which can give rise to maths anxiety.

  • Identifying some of the common traits of maths anxiety which may be presented by pupils at secondary level and practical advice on providing support.

  • Developing strategies to address instances of maths anxiety and setting pupils on a more confident and positive course through the rest of their school career and beyond.

  • Knowing where to find reliable sources of further information, resources and support.
