About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 60 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, governors, designated mental health leads teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on designing and implementing an effective mental health intervention which is appropriate for children of primary age.

The mental health and wellbeing of children and young people continues to be a subject of national focus, with research indicating a huge rise in mental health issues in young people since the start of the pandemic. Schools are in a unique position to be able to support pupils, not only through preventative programmes, but also early intervention to avoid escalation of need.

In this webinar, Anna Bateman, subject matter expert on mental health and wellbeing, who has worked in an advisory role for the DfE, explains common signs and symptoms of emerging mental health conditions, and what schools can do in terms of early intervention and facilitating treatment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to design and deliver an effective mental health intervention for children of primary age, including, where necessary, the involvement of outside agencies.

  • Gaining insight into the definition of the term ‘intervention’, different levels of intervention and when and where each might be appropriate.

  • Recognising the signs of broad-ranging emerging mental health issues, and establishing processes for effective response.

  • Appreciating the challenges of implementing an effective mental health intervention, and what schools can do to address them.

  • Recognising the importance of establishing a culture of open and honest communication, where pupils’ feelings are respected and listened to.
