About the Webinar

Webinar Runtime: 56 Minutes

This webinar will provide schools leaders, headteachers, subject leads and teachers with a conceptual understanding of metacognition and how it can benefit learning.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) report that metacognition strategies have consistently high levels of impact, with pupils making an average of +7 months progress when used well. In addition, the costs associated with metacognition are extremely low, including the necessary professional development of teachers.

In this webinar, award-winning teacher and education consultant, Phil Beadle, explores how and why schools should consider the implementation of metacognitive methods in their teaching and learning and provides guidance on how schools can encourage self-regulated learners to improve pupil outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the essential elements of metacognition and its ties to meta-memory.

  • Recognising the different forms of retrieval strategy and understanding shallow and deep encoding.

  • Identifying how metacognition separates into experience, knowledge and strategy and how teachers can support pupils to self-regulate their learning.

  • Understanding how metacognition is knowledge about self, others, tasks and strategy and developing a culture of metacognition in the classroom.

  • Realising ways of supporting pupils to plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning and to develop their independent learning skills.
