About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, principals, governors, teachers and senior leaders for wellbeing and pastoral support with an expert insight into and practical review of Australia’s national mental health and wellbeing strategy for children which schools are expected to adopt.

On 12 October 2021, the Australian government launched the world’s first ‘National Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy'. It aims to provide a long-term vision for how Australia should universally support the mental health and wellbeing of all children and is the first time any government has developed a strategy that considers mental health and wellbeing outcomes for children from birth to 12 years of age, as well as their families and communities who nurture them.

In this webinar, mental health and wellbeing expert, Dr Lyn O’Grady, explores what the impact of the strategy will be on schools, how it is likely to shape future policy and what measures can be put in place to help support its implementation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding what the strategy means for schools, both now and in the future, and how schools can evaluate their current practice in line with national priorities.

  • Recognising the reasons behind the strategy, why it was developed and how, including the guiding principles that have been used as the foundation upon which to build it.

  • Appreciating what government expectations are surrounding implementation and action responsibility and who is likely to be involved in the process.

  • Identifying practical steps that can be taken now to build on objectives from the strategy and develop a cultural shift in the way mental health and wellbeing of children is considered.

  • Breaking down and understanding the four focus areas of the strategy and what impact each of the key objectives are likely to have on schools.
