About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 47 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide academy trustees, local governors, chairs, committee members, financial officers and governance professionals with an in-depth review of the 2021 edition of the Academy Trust Handbook (also known as the Academies Financial Handbook), due to come into effect on 1 September 2021.

On 16 June 2021 the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) published the Academy Trust Handbook 2021. The handbook, which has been re-named to accurately reflect trusts’ existing responsibilities in a wider range of areas, aims to provide a ‘one stop shop’ for trustees, local governors and leaders of trusts to understand their legal and regulatory requirements.

In this webinar, Graham Fitzgerald will provide an expert analysis of the key updates to the new guidance, running through the latest changes to the trusts’ existing obligations, highlighting new responsibilities and delivering a comprehensive overview of what this means for those involved in governance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the governance and financial responsibilities of academy trusts and their statutory responsibilities to safeguarding and health and safety.

  • Recognising the main changes to trusts’ roles and responsibilities, including who should be part of the governance structure and realising the value of external reviews.

  • Appreciating what trusts main financial requirements are and ensuring they are aware of their legal duties around financial planning, budgets and reporting procedures.

  • Understanding the need to have in place a process for internal scrutiny and to conduct checks to ensure systems are effective and compliant.

  • Recognising the core changes to how ESFA will oversee trusts and intervene if concerns arise, including broadening their remit and providing advice on cybercrime.
