About the Webinar

The DfE recently commissioned a research paper to identify what schools across England were doing to support attainment among the most able disadvantaged pupils from KS2 to KS4. Significant gaps continue to exist and expand between the achievements of able disadvantaged pupils and their more fortunate peers.

This webinar will focus and discuss findings from that research, with an emphasis on the lessons for secondary School Leaders engaged in developing support for their most academically able disadvantaged pupils. Moreover, it will look at current best practice from a cohort of schools where able disadvantaged pupils make better than average progress.

Learning Outcomes

  • Risk and protective factors for academic success for a school cohort

  • Role and place of leadership, infrastructure and partnerships in successful support of academically able disadvantaged students

  • Monitoring, review and evaluation

  • Discuss the implications for successfully implementing support strategies

  • Potential barriers and responses to these barriers

  • Guidelines and examples of successful practices

Academically Able Disadvantaged Pupils

Very good webinar, highlighting the change in pupils that are supported with in primary school but don't achieve their potential in high school. I agree that more support should be given to pupils in this range, supporting them throughout their education.
Carol Travers-Orton, Support staff - Robin Hood Academy

Supporting Academically Able - Disadvantaged Students

Sobering statistics to make all secondary teachers pause to consider how to best support this student sub-group. The Findings-based Model is clearly rooted in evidence and a very clear, persuasive and structured strategy. Thorough research based on real life experiences of schools. Reports on the most effective strategies for fully supporting this cohort of students. Excellent Webinar.
Richard Stroud - The Forest High School

Practical tips on motivating the most able disadvantaged pupils.

My school has undertaken all of the initiatives in the webinar and we would concur that bought-in ready made courses are not always best. Equally we would like to take our year 9 on more university visits prior to choosing their GCSEs rather than taking them on visits in yr 11 or 12 when perhaps the poor choices have already been made. The biggest issue is combating home life lack of expectation and the secret aspirations of the young individual.
Frances Suc-Diamond - St Angela's Ursuline School

Very informative

Excellent webinar. Good detail. Very revealing and thought provoking.
