About the Webinar

This webinar will provide governors, senior leaders and staff who work in out of school settings (OOSS) with an understanding of their statutory safeguarding responsibilities and practical advice on implementing recommended best practice in line with DfE guidance.

All OOSS providers have a duty of care toward the children who attend their setting. This means that, by law, they must take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the children and to protect them from harm, including compliance with health and safety law, statutory safeguarding policies and governance requirements.

In this webinar, Thomas Stead, designated safeguarding lead and advanced skills teacher with over 10 years’ safeguarding experience, will discuss what OOSS legal duties are, review core pieces of DfE guidance and explain how settings can develop and employ best practice measures to keep children safe from harm.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding DfE statutory safeguarding requirements for all OOSS including policy development, suitability of settings and emergency procedures.

  • Recognising how to develop and implement health and safety procedures in line with legal requirements and statutory guidance.

  • Identifying the key areas that should be considered around safeguarding and child protection including types of abuse, managing concerns and reporting disclosures.

  • Understanding the importance of safe recruitment, carrying out DBS checks and making sure the necessary measures are in place with respect to suitability of staff.

  • Realising how to ensure effective governance, implement management policies and ensure all other safeguarding requirements are taken into consideration.
