About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 7 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide governors, headteachers, senior leaders and teaching staff with an understanding of the legal requirements relating to political impartiality in schools and how these legal duties might impact teaching and extra-curricular activity.

On 17 February 2022, the DfE published their guidance on political impartiality in schools. The guidance aims to support those working with and in schools to understand the relevant legal duties and provides advice on how they can be considered when teaching about political issues, working with external agencies and beyond the curriculum.

In this webinar John Rees, RSHE subject matter expert with over 25 years’ educational leadership experience, will provide an expert overview of the new guidance, explaining what the law says, what schools’ responsibilities are and how staff should consider teaching about political issues as part of broad and balanced curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognising the legal requirements placed on schools around political impartiality, how they work in combination with other statutory requirements and understanding key terms.

  • Identifying ways that schools should consider what to teach around political issues, developing a balance in teaching and ensuring what is taught is age-appropriate.

  • Understanding how to address sensitive political issues, guidance on expressing personal opinions and what to consider when using external agencies.

  • Recognising how to encourage pupils’ engagement and interest in political issues, without endorsing partisan views, and the law on political activity by pupils.

  • Understanding expectations on staff behaviour during political events, requirements with respect to public displays and how to handle concerns about political impartiality.
