About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 44 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, curriculum leaders, subject leaders, teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on integrating individual subjects into a broad and balanced primary curriculum which facilitates education recovery.

In planning for the new academic year, schools will be considering how to adjust their curriculum so that it aligns with Ofsted’s expectations as defined in the School Inspection Handbook, and also addresses gaps in knowledge and learning loss, in accordance with DfE non-statutory guidance, after disruption to schooling this year.

In this webinar, Dr Katy Bloom, Senior Lecturer and School Learning and Teaching Lead, will provide a definition of the term ‘broad and balanced curriculum’ based on its context within government guidance, and explains how schools can adjust the curriculum to ensure that it prioritises gaps, misconceptions and insecure knowledge, particularly where these might present difficulties in mastering the next stage of a curriculum subject or accessing other subjects.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to integrate primary-level subjects into a broad and balanced curriculum which facilitates education recovery, aligned with government expectations.

  • Gaining an insight into the term ‘broad and balanced curriculum’ and how this translates into best classroom practice.

  • Appreciating the challenges primary schools face in achieving government’s vision of the curriculum, due to the impact of the pandemic on teaching and learning.

  • Identifying the critical content for progression in each subject and across subjects, so that assessments and interventions can target these areas.

  • Being able to identify evidence-based best practice and resources to enhance teaching and learning, education recovery and pupil attainment.
