About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, English leads, teachers and Teaching Assistants with an insight into the criteria which define a full systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme, so that they can review and, where necessary, amend provision in alignment with DfE requirements.

In April 2021, the DfE’s policy paper, Choosing a phonics teaching programme, announced the launch of a new validation service for SSP programmes, with supporting documentation identifying 16 core criteria deemed essential for pupils to become fluent readers.

In this webinar, Jayne Robinson, School Leader and SCITT tutor whose 25 years’ experience includes roles as NQT mentor and EYFS lead, brings together criteria set out in DfE’s Teachers’ Standards, Early Years Framework, SSP policy and guidance documents, and Ofsted’s School Inspection Handbook, helping schools to evaluate current provision and ensure fidelity to a full SSP programme.

Learning Outcomes

  • Being able to identify the characteristics of a full SSP programme, aligned with criteria set out in relevant DfE publications and Ofsted’s School Inspection Handbook.

  • Appreciating the rationale for fidelity to a single SSP programme, and ensuring consistency between the scheme of work and reading materials and across all lessons.

  • Understanding how to audit existing phonics provision, identifying strengths and weaknesses and planning future provision to meet the needs of all pupils.

  • Gaining insight into Ofsted’s inspection process for phonics curriculum intent, implementation and impact, and the preparations schools should make.

  • Identifying the resources schools can draw upon to facilitate the development of an ambitious phonics curriculum for all pupils, including the lowest-performing readers.
