About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 1 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, teachers, and reading and literacy leads with practical guidance on developing a strategy for teaching and assessing reading comprehension to develop the comprehension skills of readers of all abilities.

To best support early reading comprehension, schools can draw upon a wide range of techniques to teach and assess pupils’ understanding of the texts they read. These include asking pupils the right questions to ensure that they have really processed meaning at a deeper level.

In this webinar, Emma Rogers, experienced literacy and learning expert, senior lecturer, English lead and former teacher, identifies a range of practices which schools can easily incorporate into daily classroom practice to progress pupils’ reading comprehension skills so that they can attain early literacy goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to develop a reading comprehension strategy which incorporates a wide repertoire of teaching and assessment practices.

  • Appreciating the role of talk in encouraging pupils reflect upon the themes of a book before, during and after a reading session.

  • Recognising the different processes involved in understanding a text, and the challenges for early readers in developing comprehension skills.

  • Gaining familiarity with a range of teaching and assessment techniques to support pupils’ reading comprehension skills, including alternatives to questions and recording methods.

  • Being able to identify a range of further resources to enhance early readers’ comprehension skills so that they can confidently progress to the next level.
