About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 48 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, teachers, and reading and literacy leads with practical guidance on refining reading provision, drawing on models of reading and evidence-based best practice to enthuse readers and enhance pupil outcomes.

Literacy is, of course, one of the greatest gifts schools can bestow: opening up a world of knowledge, understanding and opportunity, and the means by which pupils access the wider curriculum. As the national curriculum in England framework document states, ‘Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds’.

In this webinar, Emma Rogers, experienced literacy and learning expert, senior lecturer, English lead and former teacher, explains identifies the theory and practice of an effective reading strategy, helping schools to enable young readers of all abilities to achieve literacy goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to incorporate evidence-based practice into a reading strategy to enhance reading outcomes for all pupils.

  • Being able to evaluate current reading provision and identify areas for development, aligned with current pedagogical thinking and best practice.

  • Recognising the importance of motivation as a factor in learning to read, and creating a reading-rich environment offering diverse and challenging reading material.

  • Becoming familiar with a range of effective pedagogies, including shared and guided reading, book-related talk and dialogic teaching.

  • Being able to identify a range of further resources to support the development of an effective reading strategy.
