About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 59 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide governors, headteachers and schools leaders with an overview of the draft statutory guidance on schools causing concern for the 2022/23 academic year and how to work with local authorities and Regional Directors (RDs) to support school improvement and promote high standards.

On 28 March 2022, the DfE published their open consultation on supporting schools that are not making necessary improvements. The consultation aims to seek views on the government’s proposal to make all schools with two consecutive Ofsted judgments of below ‘Good’ eligible for intervention, and also provides a full draft guidance document on schools causing concern that would be indicative of changes made if the proposals were adopted. The consultation closes 23 May 2022.

This webinar will explore what the new measures would mean for schools, providing a detailed insight into how local authorities would be expected to discharge their responsibilities and how schools may become ‘eligible for intervention’ under the guidance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the rationale behind developing a change in DfE policy around intervention in schools and how this links into the government’s ‘levelling up’ white paper.

  • Recognising the key principles underlying the guidance on ‘schools causing concern’ and core areas that schools should be aware of, including eligibility criteria for intervention.

  • Identifying how schools can work with the LA and RD to ensure areas of underperformance, mismanagement or failure are challenged and schools are supported to improve.

  • Understanding the expectations placed on governors to ensure they have the necessary skills to deliver high standards of governance and support high performance.

  • Realising how and when the DfE will implement the new measure on intervention for schools not making necessary improvements and how Ofsted judgements will be used.
