About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 2 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide teaching assistants with advice and practical guidance on supporting pupils with wide-ranging starting-points and needs in science lessons, through one-to-one and small group work, to enhance engagement and attainment.

Teaching assistants form a huge part of the school workforce, and are often assigned responsibility for supporting pupils, particularly low-attaining or disadvantaged pupils, or those with SEND. A wide range of strategies and resources exist which teaching assistants can draw upon to enhance support in science lessons.

In this webinar, Dr Katy Bloom, Senior Lecturer and School learning and Teaching Lead with advanced skills teacher status, will explore the role of the teaching assistant in science lessons and identify strategies and resources to enhance pupil outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the role of the teaching assistant in science lessons and how to maximise the support they can offer pupils

  • Appreciating the challenges of the teaching assistant role, including the development of subject knowledge

  • Gaining insight into the principles and practice of dialogic teaching to help pupils gain a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and their practical application

  • Becoming familiar with a range of other scaffolding strategies which teaching assistants can use as instructional approaches

  • Being able to identify a range of credible resources to further enhance the impact of teaching assistant support in science lessons
