About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 14 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, PE teachers and SENCOs with advice and practical guidance on supporting the participation of all pupils in PE lessons, including those with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as autism.

The SEND code of practice 2015 highlights the importance of including pupils with SEND ‘in all the opportunities available to other children and young people so they can achieve well’. Full access to the PE curriculum has the potential to enhance both physical and mental wellbeing, bringing opportunity not only for physical exercise, but also social interaction, collaboration and teamworking.

In this webinar, Caroline Holder, physical education advisor with expertise as designer/leader of PE programmes, explains how the needs of pupils with wide-ranging SEND can be accommodated in secondary PE lessons so that they can access the same high-quality curriculum as their peers.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to adapt PE provision so that pupils with a broad range of SEND, including autism, can enjoy the same curriculum opportunities afforded to their peers

  • Appreciating the legal context and schools’ statutory duty to provide access for all pupils to a high-quality curriculum

  • Gaining insight into the diverse needs of pupils with SEND, which may include physical, social and/or emotional aspects

  • Recognising the benefits for pupils with SEND in gaining full access to the PE curriculum, opening up opportunities both at school and in future life

  • Being able to identify a range of resources to accommodate the needs of pupils with SEND in PE lessons, thereby promoting accessibility and inclusivity
