About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 84 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, RSHE curriculum and subject leaders, teachers and practitioners with practical advice on teaching about the risks of drugs, alcohol and tobacco in an age-appropriate way and aligned with DfE statutory guidance.

Young people are subjected to a stream of information and a range of influences on and offline, and schools have a statutory duty to teach them how stay safe and healthy and manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. This includes open and age-appropriate dialogue on the use of legal and illegal harmful substances and their risks.

In this webinar, John Rees, RSHE subject matter expert with over 25 years’ educational leadership experience, explains how schools can broach the subjects of drug-taking and alcohol and tobacco use in their specific setting, and use age-appropriate content to teach about the impact of harmful substances on people’s lives.

Learning Outcomes

  • Being able to empower pupils to make positive life choices through an understanding of the risks of drug, alcohol and tobacco use.

  • Appreciating the legal context and schools’ statutory duties with regard to relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education.

  • Being able to challenge the normalisation of both legal and illegal substance use via education on their health risks.

  • Understanding how to incorporate education on drug, alcohol and tobacco use into a wider narrative on leading safe and healthy lives.

  • Identifying a range of further sources of information and practical guidance to enhance teaching and learning about drug, alcohol and tobacco use.
