This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders and teachers with practical guidance on lesson-to-lesson sequencing and short-term planning for primary science which is adaptive to the learning needs of groups and individuals identified in previous lessons, enhancing academic outcomes.

Detailed lesson preparation builds on medium and long-term sequences. In addition to organising activities and planning resources, it provides an opportunity to evaluate learning over the previous day or days and adapt forthcoming lesson content to address gaps in knowledge and understanding, particularly beneficial given the impact of Covid-19 on teaching and learning.

In this webinar, Dr Katy Bloom, Senior Lecturer and School Learning and Teaching Lead with Advanced Skills Teacher status, will provide practical advice on lesson sequencing and adaptive short-term planning which lead to successful and demonstrable learning over time, based on the latest subject- specific research and aligned with The Teachers’ Standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to undertake lesson sequencing and short-term planning within the context of primary science in a way which responds to the learning needs of all pupils.

  • Recognising the importance of flexible lesson design to ensure that new teaching and learning builds on secure knowledge and understanding of key concepts.

  • Appreciating the benefits of an adaptive approach in facilitating differentiation and assessment, and in permitting a spontaneous response to emerging need.

  • Taking account of the unique features and challenges of the primary science curriculum in lesson sequencing and short-term planning.

  • Being able to identify further resources to inform effective lesson sequencing and adaptive, short-term planning to enhance the outcomes of all pupils.
