About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 2 minutes (approx.)
This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, teachers and practitioners with advice and practical guidance on adapting teaching for academically driven pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them achieve excellent outcomes, in alignment with Ofsted expectations.

Disadvantage comes in many forms and may serve as a barrier to academic attainment. By getting to know pupils and adapting teaching and learning to meet their individual needs, schools can help raise their aspirations and attainment, irrespective of background.

In this webinar Haili Hughes, head of education at IRIS Connect, senior lecturer, mentor and author, and former English teacher and senior leader, explains how labels can lead to stereotyping, and underlines the importance of tailoring pedagogy to the specific needs of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them achieve their potential.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to adapt teaching and learning to help pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds realise high academic ambitions, reflecting Ofsted expectations

  • Recognising the detrimental effect of labels in triggering assumptions about an individual pupil’s academic ability

  • Appreciating the importance of cultivating relationships with pupils and their families to raise aspirations and boost progress

  • Gaining insight into the active ingredients of effective pedagogy at primary level, including adaptive teaching, scaffolding and incorporating stretch and challenge

  • Understanding current Pupil Premium Grant arrangements to support disadvantaged pupils of all abilities to achieve their potential
