About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 17 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, subject leads and teaching staff with guidance and practical steps they can take towards supporting the lowest attaining pupils to achieve better outcomes and develop a desire for learning.

Whilst the Ofsted School inspection handbook makes reference to assessing how well schools are supporting the lowest 20% of pupils who are reading below age-related expectations, all schools should have a process of identifying children most in need of additional support and have the tools available to ensure pupils can make sufficient progress.

In this webinar Megan Dixon, specialist literacy teacher and senior leader who has worked closely with the DfE, Ofsted and EEF, will explore the most common reasons for children often falling behind, strategies for support and how to motivate low-attaining pupil to learn.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the common characteristics that tend to be associated with the lowest attaining pupils and the impact this can have on teaching and learning.

  • Recognising the importance of working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including parents, to help support pupil progress and raise attainment.

  • Identifying different techniques to employ in the classroom to help target different learning needs and deliver a more personal, tailored approach to learning.

  • Appreciating the benefits of developing a positive culture of learning where pupils feel valued and supported as part of a two-way relationship.

  • Understanding how to personalise the curriculum, pedagogy and assessment and focus on engaging pupils in the process to support independent and self-directed learning.
