About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, teachers and teaching assistants with advice and practical guidance on taking a restorative approach to enhance behaviour and create learning environments which are conducive to effective teaching and learning.

In raising children’s understanding of the impact of their actions, a restorative approach can be used to build positive relationships between all members of the school community, and provide an effective means of resolving conflict when it does occur. Benefits of such an approach can include enhanced behaviour, attendance and attainment and fewer exclusions.

In this webinar, Mark Emmerson, DfE behaviour adviser, CEO of the City of London Academies Trust, former headteacher and principal, explains the principles of restorative practice and how schools can take a whole-school, restorative approach to improve behaviour and attainment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to implement restorative practice across the school to enhance behaviour, attendance, wellbeing and attainment.

  • Gaining insight into the principles underlying a restorative approach, and how it can be used to promote empathy, personal accountability and self-regulation.

  • Recognising the benefits of restorative practice in school in enhancing pupil outcomes and reducing instances of challenging and disruptive behaviour, bullying and exclusions.

  • Gaining familiarity with a range of restorative practices which schools can implement to prevent conflict arising in the first place and effectively address issues when they do occur.

  • Appreciating the importance of taking a whole-school restorative approach which engages the school community, including staff, pupils and parents.
