About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 1 minute (approx.)

This webinar will provide governors, senior leaders and HR managers with responsibility for recruitment and misconduct hearings with an overview of the updated guidance on the prohibition of teachers and the DfE open consultation on measures to change the teacher misconduct arrangements operated by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).

On 1 February 2022, the National College for Teaching and Leadership and TRA published their revised Teacher misconduct: the prohibition of teachers guidance, which set out the arrangements for the regulatory system relating to teacher misconduct. On the same day, the DfE published their ‘Teacher misconduct: regulating the teaching profession’ consultation paper in order to seek views on proposals to broaden the scope of the teacher misconduct provisions and change internal referrals. The consultation will close on 14 March 2022.

In this webinar, Matt Bromley, education writer & adviser with over twenty years’ experience as teacher, headteacher and principal, will help schools to understand the updated guidance on teacher misconduct, including the latest advice on factors relating to decisions leading to the prohibition of teachers from the teaching profession, and the main proposals outlined in the consultation document.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the changes made to the prohibition of teachers guidance and how the DfE have sought to strengthen advice, provide greater clarity and introduce new behaviours.

  • Recognising the rationale for updates to sections concerning prohibition orders, panel decision-making criteria and panel recommendations on prohibition.

  • Appreciating the background, purpose and aims behind the DfE consultation and each of the main proposals, and what existing work schools’ responses will look to build on.

  • Recognising how the proposals look to broaden the scope of the teacher misconduct regulatory regime, expand settings covered and update the process for internal referrals.

  • Understanding how to contribute to the consultation process and the relevancy for teachers, HR managers and leaders who are responsible for recruitment.
