About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, teachers, SENCOs, reading and literacy leads and teaching assistants with practical guidance on developing a strategy to teach and support pupils who struggle with dyslexia to enhance confidence, engagement and overall attainment, enabling them to fully access all curriculum subjects.

According to the British Dyslexia Association, it is estimated that 10% of the population struggle with this learning difficulty, which can range from mild to severe. There is much schools can do to support pupils who show signs dyslexia, whether or not a formal diagnosis has been made, so that they are afforded the same education opportunities as their peers.

This webinar will provide insight into dyslexia, its signs in children of secondary school age, the impact this can have on pupils’ behaviour and wellbeing, and identify a range of practices which schools can employ to support children and help them achieve their potential.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to develop a strategy to teach and support pupils who show signs of dyslexia enhancing pupils’ learning experiences and attainment, and bringing lifelong benefits.

  • Gaining insight into the medical term ‘dyslexia’, and being able to dispel misconceptions, including that this learning difficulty is solely concerned with reading and writing skills.

  • Recognising the signs of dyslexia in secondary-age children, and that the combination of symptoms will vary and are unique to each individual.

  • Understanding how to build trust and confidence in pupils who display signs of dyslexia, and choosing teaching techniques which best meet each pupil’s specific needs.

  • Being able to identify a range of further resources to inform the development of a strategy for teaching and supporting pupils with dyslexia.
