About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 59 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, history subject leads and teachers with guidance and support on reviewing and enhancing their curriculum to raise awareness of the contribution Black people have made to our freedoms, culture and society.

There is an expectation from the DfE that pupils should be taught about different societies as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Children of all ages should be taught about how different groups have contributed to the development of Britain, including the voices and experience of Black people.

In this webinar, Lana Crosbie, senior leader, race specialist and equality campaigner with 20+ years’ experience working in schools, will explore how educators can incorporate black history into their teaching and considers how schools can deliver a responsive curriculum that is reflective of the wider world and helps to equip young people with a sense of identity, belonging and connectedness.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding what Black history actually means and how schools can look to review, embed and diversify their teaching around the topic.

  • Recognising the importance of deconstructing what ‘Britishness’ means and reconceptualising pupils’ understanding to help widen learning.

  • Identifying practical ways to support classroom teaching around Black history that not only supports inclusivity, but also raises pupil attainment.

  • Appreciating the immediate and long-term benefits of engaging children to recognise and celebrate the contribution Black lives have made to history.

  • Understanding the challenges that educators might face delivering Black history as part of the curriculum and ensuring teaching is culturally responsive.
