About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 86 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders, mental health leads, SENCOs, teachers and practitioners with an introductory overview of the vast and complex subject of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), dispelling common misconceptions and helping schools to establish a whole-school approach to supporting pupils with ASD.

In taking account of the latest research and understanding of ASD, schools can best serve the needs of pupils affected by autism, providing them with the same social and academic opportunities afforded to their peers as they move towards adulthood.

In this webinar, the National Association for Special Educational Needs (nasen), a charitable membership organisation which supports those working with children and young people with SEND, will challenge established thinking and empower schools to implement a holistic approach which best meets the specific needs of pupils with autism.

Learning Outcomes

  • Being able to use current understanding of ASD to inform a whole-school strategy which involves pupils themselves determining the support they need.

  • Understanding the group of complex neurodevelopment disorders covered by the term ASD and the widely differing ability levels of pupils with ASD.

  • Gaining an insight into the findings of most recent research into ASD and how this evidence can help dispel common misunderstandings about the disorder.

  • Recognising the common signs and symptoms of ASD which can impair daily functioning such as social and communication difficulties and repetitive behaviours.

  • Being equipped with a range of credible resources and tools to ensure that the school's approach to ASD reflects best practice and current thinking.
