In response to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, there is an expectation that schools will have contingency plans in place for the provision of remote education and blended learning, should individuals or groups of pupils need to self-isolate. This in turn assumes mastery of the latest video communications technology.

Presented by John Insley, practising e-safety lead and current head of IT and computing, this beginner’s guide shows headteachers and teaching staff how to create and manage a virtual classroom or meeting using Google Classroom, identifying key tips, tools, features and benefits.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to create instant virtual meets or schedule classes in advance.

  • Identifying settings which can be adjusted to create an optimum classroom environment.

  • Identifying tools which enable the host to have overall control of the virtual classroom, including entry and exit of pupils.

  • Understanding how to use features such as creating assignment, documents, using breakout rooms and recording to deliver effective remote education.

  • Appreciating other Google Classroom features such as raise hand and chat functions.
