About the Webinar

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, SENCOs, teachers and teaching assistants with advice and practical guidance on developing effective strategies to support pupils with Tourette’s Syndrome and tics.

Tourette’s Syndrome is a condition which causes repeated, involuntary movements and sounds (tics), and affects approximately 1 in 100 children and young people of school age in the UK, and can hugely impact a child’s ability to learn and feel socially included. However, there is much schools can do to help pupils with Tourette’s Syndrome gain full access to the curriculum and achieve their potential.

In this webinar, Karen Pilling, SEND expert and deputy headteacher, with an extensive background leading on SEND training in schools, provides insight into Tourette’s Syndrome and tics, and its links with other SEND issues, and explains how schools can best provide classroom support to minimise the disorder’s negative effects on pupils’ lives.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gaining insight into Tourette’s Syndrome and tics, including definitions of terms, and understanding the impact of the disorder on pupil attainment and wellbeing

  • Appreciating that Tourette’s Syndrome and tics can be linked to comorbidities which may also require SEND support in school

  • Recognising myths and misconceptions surrounding the condition, and being able to identify activities to reduce classroom stigma

  • Gaining familiarity with a range of strategies for supporting pupils to facilitate teaching and learning and social inclusion

  • Appreciating the importance of offering guidance to parents, and working alongside them to support pupils affected by the condition
