About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 61 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, governors, teaching and non-teaching staff with advice and practical guidance on recognising the signs of different types of abuse in young people, and understanding what steps to take in response.

Given the amount of time they spend with pupils, school staff are well positioned to spot the signs of child abuse. This is, however, a complex process: the signs may not necessarily be obvious and can vary, depending on the type of abuse. Young people may not fully understand the concept of abuse, fear the consequences of making a disclosure, and unusual behaviours may be attributable to other causes.

In this webinar, Robin Watts, international safeguarding expert and education consultant who has worked with schools worldwide, explains some common signs that should trigger concern for the welfare of young people, and the steps that school staff should take in immediate response.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to recognise signs of the different types of abuse in pupils, and how to respond in order to keep them safe.

  • Gaining insight into the concepts of safeguarding and child protection, and educators’ statutory duties to promote and protect the welfare of children and young people.

  • Recognising what constitutes child abuse, and the various forms it can take, including physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect.

  • Being able to identify common signs of abuse in children of secondary age and distinguish these from behaviours which may be attributable to other causes.

  • Appreciating how to respond to signs of abuse, including creating a safe space where discussion can take place and young people feel that they are being listened to.
