About the Webinar

Webinar Duration: 1 hour 54 minutes (approx.)

This webinar will equip headteachers, school leaders, teachers, and reading and literacy leads with advice and practical guidance on implementing the EEF’s newly updated report ‘Improving literacy at key stage 2, which brings together key principles of effective literacy teaching to enhance outcomes for all pupils.

It is essential that pupils become skilled readers and writers at key stage 2 so that they are ready to take on the challenges of secondary school. The EEF reports that disadvantaged pupils are 20% less likely than peers to attain expected standards by the time they leave primary school, underlining the importance of providing effective support at this point in pupils’ schooling.

In this webinar, Megan Dixon, specialist literacy teacher and senior leader who has worked closely with the EEF, DfE and Ofsted, will provide insight into the EEF’s updated recommendations for improving literacy at key stage 2, and explain how schools can translate them into effective classroom practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding how to enhance the literacy capabilities of the whole class at key stage 2 by implementing evidence-based practice established in the EEF’s updated guidance report.

  • Recognising the importance of developing pupils’ language capabilities as a means of developing their thinking and use of language and broadening vocabulary.

  • Gaining insight into effective reading strategies, including practices to develop fluency, comprehension as well as foundational skills including decoding, where necessary.

  • Being able to implement practices to support the development of writing composition, transcription and sentence construction.

  • Becoming familiar with accurate formative and diagnostic assessments and structured interventions for pupils who are struggling with literacy.
